There are two joints in the lesser toes and one joint in the large toe. If the deformity occurs in the lesser toes and in the joint nearest the nail, it is called a mallet toe. If the deformity in the lesser toes involves both of the joints, then the toe is referred to as a claw toe. All four toe conditions may cause cramps in the toes, foot and leg due to the abnormal function of the tendons in the foot. If a mallet toe has occurred, you are likely to suffer from a corn at the end of the toe. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Tarsal tunnel syndrome results from compression to a nerve that runs through a narrow passage behind the inner ankle bone down to the heel. It is caused by injury to the ankle, such as a sprain or fracture, or by a growth that presses against the nerve. Excessive Pronation. Pronation is the normal motion that allows the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces and to absorb shock. Excessive pronation occurs when the foot has a tendency to turn inwardly and stretch and pull the fascia. It can cause not only heel pain, but hip, knee, and lower back problems. Pain in the foot is one of the most common problems experienced by people at some time or the other in their life. There are several causes of foot problems or foot pain and the pain in foot is usually observed in the toe, top of the foot or the heel region. Here we will see more on the causes of pain on top of foot in detail. All the causes of pain on top of foot can be treated effectively with the help of physical therapy, medications or surgery. One is advised not to ignore the symptoms but consult the doctor and get the condition treated immediately. Take care! Soak the painful foot in warm spring water. This is the water that is obtained from a natural spring. They contain minerals that are dissolved in from rocks. These minerals lend healing qualities to water and it is like a foot spa at home. One can also add some rock salt to it for added pain relief. If foot pads and shoe inserts do not provide enough foot pain relief, the next treatment for Morton's Neuroma is a cortisone injection at the site of the pain. Surgery to free the entrapped foot nerve is the last treatment option to relieve the foot pain of Morton's Neuroma. In some rare situations, patients don't find relief with shoe modifications, and may require a surgical procedure. The usual surgical procedure is called a metatarsal osteotomy to correct the abnormality of the metatarsal bone. An osteotomy is a surgical procedure to deliberately fracture a bone to change the length and/or alignment of the bone. This can alter the forces of weightbearing in the forefoot to relieve the symptoms of foot pain. These are visible and result from skin building up. Corns resemble horns, where calluses are flat and rough. This is also not my issue, but these are common issues. Pain in the ball of the foot is called metatarsalgia and may have many different causes (including arthritis, poor circulation, pinching of the nerves between the toes, posture problems, and various disorders). However, most often the pain is caused by nerve damage or by an abnormality of the joints nearest the balls of the feet (metatarsal joints). Often, developing one disorder that causes pain in the ball of the foot contributes to development of another disorder that causes pain in the same location. Freiberg Disease Irritation of interdigital nerves (in the balls of the feet) may cause enlargement of the nerves, causing pain in the balls of the feet. Causes The bottom of the foot is prone to getting puncture wounds and cuts, especially when walking barefoot. A puncture wound creates a small hole into the foot, usually caused by stepping on a nail, causing pain and swelling at the injury site. A puncture wound should be examined by a physician to determine if it is contaminated with foreign material. Deep cuts are open tears in the skin capable of causing pain and swelling. Once bleeding is controlled, a deep cut should be evaluated by a physician to determine if it needs stitching. References As we've mentioned before, the suffix -itis means inflammation, so it follows that adding it to the word capsule (forming the new word capsulitis) also one of the most overlooked diagnoses, which is too bad, because if your metatarsalgia is caused from capsulitis, it can usually be As the capsule surrounds all sides of the joint, pain may develop on either the top or bottom of the foot, or both. But most people find Capsulitis is common when the bone in the ball of the foot is plantarflexed or "dropped," meaning relatively lower than the others. It is
